BeoReef

A Bang and Olufsen family of products for coral health

Music is powerful, and with the use of bioacoustics and sound enrichment, this speaker aims to  help in coral health by promoting and building a healthier ecosystem through the use of sound.

Bang & Olufsen

bando.png

Since its creation in 1925 Bang & Olufsen has been one of the most influential audio and home entertainment brands thanks to their iconic design, high quality materials and sound and overall carefully crafted products.

Now one of the premier luxury audio brands on the market, they continue to innovate improve their design and create products that challenge the conventions.

SUSTAINABILITY

Now more than ever their eyes are set on sustainability, with a focus on longevity and the creation and manufacturing of cradle to cradle products.

But what else can B&O do to help?

THE PROBLEM

coral bleach.jpeg

Global warming and water pollution are harming coral reefs at an alarming rate.

Coral and species living in reef depend on each other to survive, so when coral bleaches not only is it being left vulnerable and unprotected but so are the million species living in the ecosystem.

BIOACOUSTICS

"The study of the production, transmission and reception of animal sounds."

Reef recovery requires a flourishing community of living organisms such as young fish and larvae.

However..

Scientists have observed a 75% reduction in acoustic sounds in degraded reefs, which has led to almost 40% less settlement of young marine life.

SOLUTION

Soundscape Enrichment

What is soundscape enrichment?

Soundscape enrichment is a technique where artificial sounds of a healthy environment are introduce to attract new and healthy species to a desired ecosystem to help in its development and establish a healthy trajectory.

- Used to remedy decreased settlement of species

- Uses recordings taken from thriving coral reefs to increase attraction of new species to damaged reefs.

“Listening to a coral reef is like listening to an orchestra of biological sound–fish produce popping, whooping, and trumpeting sounds to warn each other of predators, to call each other when they find food, and to impress one another during the breeding season.”

Steve Simpson - Proffesor of marine biology at the Univeristy of Exeter.

THE GOAL

Develop a product line focused on reef restoration through bioacoustics and sound enrichment to directly impact the health of coral reef around the world.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to use music as a driving force for change by impacting people's lives through music, design, and sustainability practices that can ensure the longevity of our brand and the planet.

NEW BRAND VALUES

To achieve this goal it was necessary to view Bang and Olufsen with a different approach and define values that would steer the direction of its pursuit.

This 6 core values come from extensive brand and macrotrend research, observing what B&O is interested in achieving, as well as what the world needs or where it is heading.

IDEATION

idea tion.png

New form for a new way of thinking-  Form played a big part in the design of this product line, following Bang and Olufsen (rich minimalism) I developed and explored on new forms and shapes for this new B&O era. Organic shapes as a center point in the design language, representing the abundance of form in nature, the imperfect and complex structures that are ever changing and ever evolving.

MEET

BeoReef

What is BeoReef ?- BeoReef is a line of speaker that also includes an underwater speaker designed to be placed in bleached coral reefs to aid in their recovery.

This product line operates through a 1 for 1 like business model where the user would purchase a product from the consumer section and the profits from its purchase go towards funding the manufacturing distribution and placement of BeoReef speakers arrund the world.

BeoReef is made to be placed among bleaching coral reefs and produce the sound of a healthy reef to attract new species to settle and form a healthy codependent ecosystem.

Made from recycled polyethylene plastic, the outside structure is meant to withstand the ocean conditions thanks to the low risk of leaching, This type of plastic is also easily recyclable as releases no chemicals into the water

The curved solar panel top allows the speaker to obtain its own power without outside interference, the curvature of the top also maximizes the amount of sun that is obtained through the day.

Underside of the BeoReef speaker also shows a curved surface that allows the speaker to disperse the sound in multiple directions.

Alga based fabric cover serves as a dust and sand screen to avoid any harmful particles to enter the inside structure, maximizing longevity and diminishing the amount of times a person would have to interfere in the environment.

Partnering with both big and local foundations on nonprofits will allow Bang and Olufsen to know where their resources should be put into based on need.

This will also provide a wide net of volunteers that will handle the installation and monitoring of BeoReef speakers around the world’s coral reefs.

ROADMAP

waterssss.jpg

BeoReef is a short-term concept to be implemented in a 5-year timeframe with the focus on accomplishing future and long-lasting change in coral reefs around the world.

We believe that they key to a better future is to focus on the present, after all, it is the present that shapes the future.

Our Coral Reefs are dying as we speak, so action needs to be taken now if we want them to still be there in the future.
